Hi I just put my warp on my loom for Jane's Canvas Weave draft, season 5 episode 2. I'm using 8/2 cotton and realized I was short 7 warp threads half way thru the threading of the heddles.. I have tied on extra threads in the past but here I would have to put 7 threads on in one place. If I weight them off the back beam will that work or will they become twisted in the process?
Also I don't have an 8 dent reed but I do have a 6, 10 and 12. Should I use the 6 or 12 dent. If I use the 10 dent reed I would have to set my epi at 15.
thanks as always for your great advice.
Diane
S5-Episode 2 - Canvas Weave
Hi Diane - you can treat it like a "mini" warp doing what Jane did in Season 2.2.3 - Introduction to Sample One at about the 32-minute mark. Jane demonstrates how she hangs a number of warp ends off the back of the loom when she changes the red stripe to a black one in the Asymmetry sample. You will need to adjust your sett for the 8/2 cotton (rather than the instructions for the 16/2 linen). I'd sett it at 18 epi and you could use either your 6 (sley 3 per dent) or 12 dent reed (1-2 denting). Hope this helps.
Thanks Sandra. Jane’s episode 2.2.3 on adding warp threads off the back of the loom was perfect. Luckily I’m not replacing existing threads and haven’t tied on to the front beam yet, so it should be a ‘piece of cake’. I especially like the way Jane creates tension on the hanging threads using empty cones.
I will adjust the sett accordingly.
You guys rock! Thanks again.
Diane
I thought I was understanding canvas weave until I tried to weave sample #4 Canvas with TD. I’m not sure what Jane means when she explains the need to use a tie down between each unit when repeating the same unit. For instance when repeating unit A, is the tie down the first tabby in PW? I’m using a rising shed loom and my unit A is tied to treadles 3 and 4, Unit B is tied to treadles 1 and 2.
attached is a picture of samples 3 and 4 while on my loom. It doesn't look like I've tied down the units correctly - the warp floats are very long. I've uploaded my images thru the image software you are recommending. I hope this works. Thanks, Diane
Have you gone back to look at the video where Jane goes through each sample? I think that might help you understand better what she is doing with Sample #4 and the rest of the samples. It does look like you have missed the PW. Another thing you could do is to do the drawdowns that came with the Canvas Weave PDF - another visual way of understanding how Canvas Weave works. Keep us posted.
Hi Sandra,
I think I've figured it out finally. I redid sample 4 and 5 and in sample 4 tied Unit A I was repeating to the opposite tabby pic. Unit A (tied to treadles 3 and 4) tied to first tabby pick tied to treadles 1 and 3. I'm attaching two images. Hope they are clear.
thanks, diane

It looks like you have it, Diane. Did you review the video or drawdown the pages from the PDF? The final proof will be when you wash it and everything falls into place.
Yes I reviewed the video and did more drawdowns, more than you can imagine. But it finally clicked. I will continue with the sample then see how everything looks when washed. I'm hoping the weave will open up more. thanks again.
I changed my sett to 15 using a 10 dent reed (1,2) and found little difference when I rewove the sample from using a 12 dent reed with a set of 16. See images attached. I wove most of the sample (#s 1-14). I continued to have tension problems after adding 7 warp threads in the middle of the warp. This caused puckering that I couldn't get rid of even when weighting the threads off the back of the loom.
I don't know if this has already been asked but, where can I find a copy of the book "Handwoven Laces"? I found a copy on Amazon for $250 which is ridiculous.
This is to Grace Morris who was looking for Handwoven Laces. I tried to reply to your comment but the reply didn't bring me to your request. Just to let you know I have a copy coming to me by mail but I already have one. So if you are interested please get in touch with me. Thanks.
I am interested. My email is [email protected].
I am interested in an outline for the canvas baby blanket using Monte Cristo.
I am not sure how to measure PPI for this sample because of the double threads. the sheet has 16 epi & 16 ppi. I'm using 22/2 cottolin set at 16 epi and I'm getting 28ppi (7 groups of 4 picks) per inch. I have big gaps on my selvedge because I'm really not beating this at all, but it is still not square. I could see this being a yarn-loom-sett mismatch, because this loom usually weaves this yarn at 20epi/20ppi and I can try resleying again, but I wanted to double check that I'm not measuring wrong first.
should the canvas units be perfect squares? I can try to aim for that but I worry that the selvedge gaps will get bigger.
I read through all the previous posts about set on the canvas weave sampler. I'm using Venne 16/2 linnen and plan on making it slightly wider and using it as a very large tablerunner. But I'm struggeling converting set from inches to centimeters. It should be 16 EPI in an 8 dent reed. Conversion lists state 6 ends per cm in a 30/10 reed ending up with 15,12 EPI. But Jane says 15 EPI is not enough. Do I bump it up to 7 ends per cm in a 70/10 reed (17,64 EPI) or should I I do 2-2-2-3 in a 30/10 reed? Whats that in EPI? Or just go with the 15,1 EPI?
