Hi! I am a new weaver and signed up a month ago. Currently going through Season 1. I am following Jane’s weaving mantras throw, beat, change and beater back and extending the shuttle out. However my selvages are atrocious. They alternate between being too loopy or too tight. Any advice, suggestions, etc is greatly appreciated.. Thank you..
Hello Yen Y Tran- I am very much a beginner myself, but I would be thinking of things like …..
a) when you catch the shuttle as it comes out of the shed, make sure to bring it straight out to the left or right ( whichever side you are on) rather than bringing it forward towards you
b) make sure you have adequate tension on your warp including your floating selvedge threads ( use S hook or similar to increase the tension if necessary, hung off the threads back near the warp beam
c) check after each pick that the weft thread is sitting up near your selvedge thread on the side your shuttle came from and if, when you beat that pick, you can see that the weft thread at the selvedge is either on loose or too tight, take that pick back out and try again!
That’s just what I have kept in mind myself, but hopefully some of the very helpful experts on this forum will come to your assistance!! If you could send a photo of your wayward selvedge that would probably be very useful too.
Thank you. I’ll try it out.
