Whew! Time has flown by and we are heading quickly into our happy time of the year, as we get projects lined up and woven for the cosy season ahead. What's on your loom as we begin another new month?
For 3 days I practiced “denting”. Now I’m ready to make my 4 scarfs. I’m only 5 FT and i dont like my scarfs long below my waist and I dont like to wrapped 2 times around my neck. I love “cowel” neck scarfs.
The 4 scarfs will be gifts to friends. 2 are short like me and 2 are over 5’4”.
Looking for some guidance here. Thankyou
Hi Cynthia. Your comments with regards to some people who have smaller stature leads me into the impertinent musings that I have had over many months.
I have been wondering just how tall Jane is? This question arose when I was considering shuttle handling and shuttle purchasing. I have an exceptionally small hand sizing, and sooooooo, manipulating the shuttle with Janes suggestions requires much rethinking of the nutty problem.
So too the re-jigging when it comes to the throwing of the shuttle - necessary if your 'wing-span' is more of akin to a sparrow than to an eagle!!!!!
I did one scarf using "denting" and decided it wasn't my thing, however, it was lovely and my daughter-in-law loved it. I am currently planning Christmas gifts for the family...scarves for all using the Colorado Tartan as my pattern. I have all the details from the Scottish Register of Tartans (an amazing site!), the yarn (8/2 cotton because this family isn't big on wool) is ordered and today I am putting a practice warp on my Baby Wolf just to get the feel of it all. I'm really excited about this project !
I am weaving my first ever 4 shaft double weave Season 3 Episode 7 with some fibre that I had left over from a blanket that I wove for my granddaughter. End game: a shawl.
Finishing up the last of 4 random point twill towels in holiday colors... was waylaid by a wrist injury but the physical therapist said to go for it. Hope to finish this one soon!
I am dressing my loom currently with a big test sample of a huck color and weave project I took out of Season 5. This time I am dressing a 60 inch wide fine wool and super fine cotton pairing with 5 patterns from the huck warp spots weft spots and lace spots gamp. Doing this with yarn I had on hand with the idea of creating a Ruana from it. If it turns out okay, my plan is to find a better wool yarn (Zephyr is my goal) in 2 colors and make a lightweight but warm Ruana for cooler weather and dressy occasions. Thank goodness I have developed patience for such things in my later life! My current sample is a wool that is single ply and fragile and my cotton is a 60/2, therefore, I am doubling the cotton yarn and. Warping 2 threads per dent to (hopefully) give a bit of support to the threading. Fingers crossed , but I march ahead fearlessly.
Looking forward to seeing photos of the results of your hard work!!!!
Well, I beamed a 7-yard mohair warp onto my loom this week. I think it went well! I watched the mohair episodes repeatedly. The warp is purple and white stripes and I am weaving a houndstooth pattern. I kept it narrow and am hoping to make three scarves out of it.
I have a Glimakra Standard countermarche so I couldn't do a direct tie-up (or at least I couldn't figure out how). Fortunately, I am getting clear sheds lifting two harnesses at a time when I "throw, beat, change, beater back."
Hello Jennifer- that looks lovely. I have used cotton warps so far on my Jane table loom but would love to try wool. I am concerned that the warp threads would break under tension though. Is the mohair stronger than sheep’s wool would be? Any advice welcome! Thanks.
