I am excited to have just purchased my first new loom, a David 3, also my first floor loom. Although it has 8 shafts I’m only ready for 4 shaft patterns, I bought 8 for future proofing! Assembling the loom has raised a question though, can I just completely ignore shafts 5-8 or do they still have to be connected to an unused treadle?

Congrats on joining the David 3 club !! I think you should connect all of the treadles so that you can adjust the shaft heights etc for the initial setup. When you are weaving with just 4 harnesses, you don't need to have any of the treadles tied up.

Thanks. Just trying to figure out the shaft heights!
I meant to state that you don't need to have any treadles tied up to harnesses you aren't using when weaving with 4 harnesses....It would be really hard to weave if you didn't have and of the treadles tied up LOL...glad you understood what I was thinking instead of what I wrote.
