S5-Episode 1 - Turned Twill
Hi, how do I find all the comments and questions from the old guild forums?
The Forum on the original JST site will still be accessible for searching and reading comments that are already there. However, once that site is paired down - you won’t be able to ask new questions there. Hopefully we can build up a continuing resource here :-)
Ok, but the new people are going to be missing out!
We’ve started Forums here so we can keep in touch, ask questions, get answers and show our “stuff”. Go to the Forum page and click on All Threads and you’ll see what we have set up for every Season and Episode. The Forum conversations that have taken place on the original JST site will still be there to read and look for answers to questions.
I'm still working on the first project of season 5, the turned twill on 8. There appear to be no threading or sleying errors, and some of it looks good, but in the section where there is a large stripe of taupe, threaded 5,6,7,8, I'm having a lot of trouble with random skipping. I'd love to hear any possible fixes for this. It's on a Mighty Wolf, and I'm keeping the tension very tight and advancing the shed frequently. No skipping on the narrow stripes threaded on the same shafts.
Deborah, This project is an unbalanced weave because one side of the harnesses doesn't have any heddles unless you put an equal amount of heddles on each side as you threaded. I had the same problem because I didn't do that.
Schacht makes harness shims in case someone has a harness that wants to rise unevenly. I just put a harness shim on the left on harnesses 1 to 4 and a harness shim on the right on harnesses 5 to 8. It worked beautifully after that. Happy Weaving!
Brilliant! Thank you!
Harness shims? I have not heard of them. Please explain.
Can you show what a harness shim looks like?
It is a thin piece of metal that looks like a short heddle bar and fits in the wolf looms between the harness and the side of the loom. You can order them, I got mine from Bountiful.
I think I know the answer, but am hoping I am wrong! If I want to weave a warp-faced framer, do I tie up 6 harness per treadle? I.e. instead of 1,5, I tie up 2,3,4,6,7,8? (Weaving on a Jack loom)
I understand the tie-up sequences for turned twill but......... I have a Leclerc Voyageur Table loom and I'm not quite sure about how to weave any of the towels. First of all I'd need to create a lift plan. For towels 1,2 and 3, do I go across from left to right for tie-up #1 and create a lift plan for all As and Bs?
Ex.: 1567, 2568, 3578, 4678, 1235, 1246, 1347, 2348. And lift plan for framers: 15, 26, 37, 48. And lift plan for broken twill treadling: 4, 3, 2, 1 with no 5, 6, 7, or 8.
I'd really appreciate clarification here.
Thanks.
I'm sorry Joy, unfortunately, your question slipped through the cracks and I'm not quite sure what you are asking. I have a Woolhouse table loom and woven many different structures on it. The instructions and tie-ups are in the handout. If it were me - I'd print out the tie-ups and tape the one I plan to weave to the loom on one side and the instructions for the individual towels on the other (I have done this many times ;-) For the towels, I would just manually change the shafts moving between X and Y and the colours as directed for each towel. It will be slow going, changing that many shafts for each pick, but you will get there. I may not be understanding your question - please let us know.
It has been some time since I asked the question above. I sorted out my problem myself and I am now about to start Towel #5. I understand how to do the X and Y treadling on my voyageur but I can't figure out "all broken treadling". I get the feeling that I don't just do Y. Then there is 10" of straight treadling in the pattern. Do I just do X?
I'd really appreciate your input!
Thanks
I'm happy you were able to work out your last problem by yourself - in the end, you will understand Turned Twill far better for doing that ;-) You will find that Jane discusses towel #5 in Episode 1, lesson 2 at the 51:29 and 55:38 minute marks. You can get right to any part of a video by finding the time in the Indexes that are updated with each episode release. https://help.schoolofweaving.tv/article/97-indexes A question - have you changed your tie-up back to tie-up #2? If so, a quick answer - using tie-up #2 you DO weave all Y treadling until you get to the 44 picks of Gold X then revert to Y repeating the Y-X-Y-Y, 4 more times until you get to the 10" of gold X. Have fun and let us know if this doesn't answer your question, Joy.
I know I saw a handout with each of the towels in season 5 ep 1 labeled with the numbers across the towels. Can you point me to that resource? The handout had photos of all 12 towels and Jane's patterns were stunning, I liked the peacock and turquoise weft and need inspiration to get started. My warp is measured and ready to go. thanks, Kit
I'm digging working on 8 harnesses, love the turned twill patterns. Now....you see....I'm going to need another loom! The transition from my 4H Nilus to this table loom, borrowed to learn 8H turned twill, is challenging and slow. But, I'm already shopping. ;). And many will probably say what's the rush!
Having some fun with tie up #4. The 3/1 twill is a surprise. I'm such a fidget and naturally do NOT stick with a pattern, so I'm just playing with weft colors to see how they interact with the warp in this tie up.

And I love that each tie up sequence increases my understanding of turned twill. I'm just practicing 12 picks of X, 12 picks of Y, without changing weft color.
I posted this somewhere else, but realize this is a better spot. I'm getting floats with treadle 1 - which is lifting 1, 5, 6, 7. Seems thread 8 doesn't want to stay down. I've tried changing sheds with the beater at the fell line. I am weaving with a Nilus II Jack loom, which I understand is likely part of the problem. The bottom threads are more loose.
This first picture isn't great as this is the beginning, when I wasn't paying as much attention. But the floats are mostly on treadle 1:

This second picture, there aren't as many floats, but that's because I keep checking the shed, and unweaving when I see something wrong, but a couple at the beginning.

This is my first 8 shaft weave and I was really excited to try Turned Twill, but it has been very slow going, and I'm kind of frustrated. I can see now why folks are happy with their countermarche looms. This is the first time I've had issues with the bottom thread acting up.
Hi Sue, have you resolved the issues? are you saying that when you treadle 1,5,67 harnesses, the 8th harness doesn't stay down. I had a "sticky" harness on my schacht and had to spray the tracks holding the harnesses. It worked to stop the sticking. I love turned twill on 8 and hope you find your answers here.
